How can you say that? haha. Batmans lasted since 1939 without heath ledger, he only did the one movie.
I agree, nolan brings a unique edge to batman, but from the interview it was Bale who mainly instigated the change to a more darker tone.

He did extremely well with the billionaire playboy version of Bruce Wayne, and the deeper part of Bruce Wayne. I really liked that. He did fine acting as batman too, but that voice! What the crap??? As far as the story goes, it's amazing. It seems like it could read out of a comic and it's incredible. Heath Ledger, I was skeptical, but wow, did he do an amazing job.

IMO Michael Keaton was the best from the old school batmans. The following few movies with Kilmer and Clooney were more funny, but a bit dumber. The new school is a whole different story, so I wont compare. Just as none should compare Nicholson's Joker with Leadger's.
